Ovarian Cyst

Ovarian Cyst

This is a term used when there is a swelling in the ovary

This could contain either clear fluid , mucinous fluid old blood or sebaceous fluid.

It could cause menstrual irregularities, pain in the abdomen or painful periods. It could occur at any age groups , are generally benign and at times could be malignant

The tests done to determine and help in diagnosis are

  • Sonography
  • CT Scan
  • MRI
  • Blood tests or tumor markers

If the cyst is small, does not cause any symptoms it could be functional and does not merit any surgery. A repeat Sonography will be helpful.

But in most cases a surgery is indicated.

Laparoscopy is good in most cases but not in malignant cases

The cyst wall can be peeled on Laparoscopy and sent for testing.
