The process of fertilization, where the egg and sperm unite, occurs in the fallopian tubes. The zygote receives nourishment within the tube before eventually implanting as an embryo in the uterus. Therefore, for natural fertility, it is crucial that at least one of the fallopian tubes functions normally; otherwise, conception may be challenging.
A common method for testing tubal function is Hysterosalpingography (HSG), where a radio-opaque dye is introduced into the uterine cavity, and X-rays are used to observe its flow. If the tubes are open, the dye should be visible coming out of the fimbrial ends.
Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy are reliable methods for directly assessing the condition of the fallopian tubes, and corrective surgery can be performed during the same procedure.
Tubal issues can result from pelvic infections such as chlamydia or tuberculosis, as well as from previous appendectomy. In cases where a woman has had an ectopic pregnancy, and the tubes have been excised, natural conception may be challenging, necessitating the assistance of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) or In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
Dr. Aditi Tandon is a highly skilled laparoscopic surgeon for tubal recanalisation surgeries and surgeries for tubal blocks. For tubes that cannot be corrected, IVF is the best alternative available.
At Dr. Sudha Tandon’s Fertility, IVF, Gynec Endoscopy, and Maternity Center, we offer world-class facilities for laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery to address various pelvic pathologies. Additionally, our center provides IUI, IVF, and ICSI treatments for Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).
